I have felt very, very lucky that I work for myself and I have been able to spend 95 percent of my days this past week taking care of my physical self. I am also grateful for the clients I have, who have been completely patient and understanding of my predicament. While I’ve felt almost TOO lucky that my pain went from a 7 or and 8 to about a 3 in the space of a week, I don’t think it would have been possible if I’d had an office job, and not been able to see the doctor each day, spend a few hours walking, and then (carefully) collapse and spend most of the remainder of each day horizontal and mostly-napping.

But still, gotta pay the rent, so I detoured only slightly through North Beach just to see the sights, and then back down Market Street and on to the Mission.

Jack Kerouac Alley is a short passage between Chinatown and North Beach—it’s like an alley of horoscopes or advice in the form of poems; each time I walk through here one of the verses set into the stones gives helpful commentary on my current state of mind…

Report from the future (July 26th): I was hired to photograph a show this night, and was a little concerned about carrying camera gear for a few hours, and all of the bending and twisting and quickly navigating through people and small spaces that comes along with such a gig. I took the job because it was at a smaller venue: I knew I’d have more than three songs to get the shots, and space to move a bit more freely. I learned that just because one is low on the pain scale does not mean one is healed! I ended up really sore from being so focused on shooting that I wasn’t being mindful of my posture or movements—it’s frustrating; I feel way too young to have a “bad back” or a bad anything, but after I spend about three seconds frustrated, the feeling transforms into gratitude that my injury/limitations are so minor. It could be so much worse! It’s frustrating, yes, but it’s meant I’ve cut out a bunch of crap habits and replaced them with kale and exercise. I’M GONNA BE SO HEALTHY! 😀

The two bands I photographed were Black English (new to me, and now on rotation in my playlists), and Vela Eyes (friends of mine and a favorite!). Photos from the show are here and here.

Where should I go tomorrow?
